Red wine, in perspective

Plum-led fruit; structure varies with site and winemaking. These are tasting signposts, not a description of every bottle.

Cullen lists Merlot among the grapes in both its local vineyards. Regional or vineyard source.

What to ask at a tasting

Ask whether Merlot is bottled alone or contributes to a blend. Taste a Cabernet–Merlot beside a Cabernet-led wine, and discuss the role of each component. Avoid assuming every Merlot will be soft or ready to drink immediately.

Choosing a bottle for the table

Consider a bottle for roast poultry, tomato-based dishes or mushrooms. Choose a current release by tasting where possible, and confirm availability before planning a visit around a single-variety Merlot.

These are our pairing suggestions, not fixed rules. Vintage, winemaking and your own preferences matter.

Plan a visit

Explore our relevant winery guide, then confirm the current tasting list directly with the winery. A listed grape does not guarantee a particular wine is available today.
